Literacy

The Literacy Committee of the Green Bay Altrusa Club was created to focus more exclusively on Altrusa International’s goal to improve literacy. The Green Bay club already long encouraged literacy through volunteer efforts at Tank Elementary School and Howe School and by providing bookcases and books at Habitat for Humanity home dedications, so the Literacy Committee decided to expand into other, possibly underserved areas of the community. We currently visit the McCormick Assisted Living to encourage reading, writing and storytelling with the residents there. We have also placed a custom-made Little Free Library in front of the Altrusa Hospitality House for the neighborhood to use. In addition, we provide books for Operation: Paperback which go to service people around the world. We have also supported the cause of Literacy Green Bay to provide English as a Second Language training to new immigrants in the community.
